Quote-Psychiatry
“Although we may not know it, we have, in our day, witnessed the birth of the Therapeutic State. This is perhaps the major implication of psychiatry as an institution of social control.”
Thomas S. Szasz quotes (Hungarian psychiatrist and Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus at State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse, b.1920)

Antipsychotic Drug Use Up in Elderly Despite Warnings
August 25, 2008
MONDAY, Aug. 25 — Safety warnings slowed the use of antipsychotic drugs in seniors with dementia. But the overall use of the drugs in the elderly increased, a finding which suggests that warnings may not be sufficient to protect patients, Canadian researchers say.
Between late 2002 and June 2005, Health Canada issued three warnings that three new atypical antipsychotic drugs increased the risk of stroke and death in elderly patients with dementia.
The researchers analyzed prescription drug data in the province of Ontario and found that antipsychotic drug use among the elderly increased 20 percent from the month prior to the first warning in September 2002 to February 2007. About 70 percent of the seniors receiving antipsychotic drugs lived in nursing homes, and about 40 percent of them were 85 or older.
“This finding highlights the limited impact of warnings and suggests that more effective approaches are needed to protect vulnerable populations from potentially hazardous medications,” wrote Dr. Geoffrey Anderson, of the University of Toronto, and colleagues.
The study was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Anti-Psychiatry Blog
Just came across another anti-psychiatry Blog. Hard to read as it is white on black, but good content.

Genetech Employees Say ‘No’ to Pharmaceutical Takeover
It appears that Roche’s offer of $44 billion to take over Genetech is unlikely to go ahead.
The reason?
Many employees of Genetech have let it be known via Blogs that they will immediately put out their resumes if the deal goes ahead. They have made it clear that they have no intention of working for Big Pharma.
“I am a researcher with DNA and will put out my resume the second the deal goes through with Roche”. “Many of us here do not want to work for Big Pharma” Thus posted ‘Dan’ in the Wall Street Journal Health Blog.
“People will leave. This is not a threat but reality.” That from an anonymous employee.
Genetech is now busy trying to put together deals to buy the loyalty of their employees.
Psychiatric Drug ‘Researchers’ Busted
The Dallas Morning News reported today that a state mental health plan which would name the preferred psychiatric drugs for doping up children has been “put on hold”.
The problem is that the ‘researchers’ who worked on determining the most efficacious drugs are suspected of being in the pocket of Big Pharma.
State investigators believe that fraud has occurred. The State of Texas is suing Johnson & Johnson’s Jannsen unit for supposedly using improper influence and false advertising.
At least four of the researchers have been found to have received ‘funding’ from Big Pharma:
Graham Emslie
M. Lynn Crimson
Steven Pliszka
Carroll Hughes
What a sewage pit of corruption Big Pharma has inflicted on what should be a profession dedicated to the good health of its patients. Any treatment is okay now, no matter how harmful, no matter how young the victims, as long as it is profitable.
The word ‘disgusting’ hardly does the situation justice, but I cannot think of a better word at the moment.
The US Congressional investigators led by Senator Charles E. Grassley is really starting to make its mark. Well done Senator Grassley. It has taken too many decades to expose this grand malpractice, but at least someone has finally had the balls, not to mention the integrity, to do something.

Pharmaceutical Companies Lobbying Budget Hits 168 MILLION
According to a podcast put out by the Center for Public Integrity, Big Pharma increased its funding for Capitol Hill lobbying to 168 million… yep, that’s million.
That money, amongst ‘other things’, is used to fund 1000 lobbyists. That is two lobbyists for every member of Congress.
