U.S. children three times more medicated

U.S. children are about three times more likely to be prescribed psychotropic medications such as antidepressants than children in Europe, researchers said.  

The study, published in the journal Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health, said the differences may be due to regulatory practices and cultural beliefs about medications and emotional and behavioral problems.

Study leader Julie Zito of the University of Maryland led U.S., German and Dutch researchers who investigated prescription levels in three countries.

“Antidepressant and stimulant prevalence were three or more times greater in the United States than in the Netherlands and Germany, while antipsychotic prevalence was 1.5 to 2.2 times greater,” Zito said in a statement.

The researchers said the differences may be partly due to different diagnostic classification systems.

“The U.S. trend of increasing bipolar diagnosis in children and adolescents does not reflect European practice,” the study authors said in a statement. “Government cost restrictions in Europe, the larger number of child psychiatrists per capita in the United States and the use of two or more different psychotropic drugs in a single year in U.S. children” are possible explanations.

Direct-to-consumer drug advertising, common in the United States, is also likely to account for some of the differences, Zito said.

WASHINGTON – In an industry first, Eli Lilly and Co. says it will begin disclosing how much money it paid to individual doctors for advice, speeches and other services.

The drug company’s move comes as members of Congress push a disclosure bill in an effort to prevent such payments from improperly influencing medical decisions.

Beginning next year, Eli Lilly will disclose payments of more than $500 to doctors for their roles as advisers and for speaking at educational seminars. In later years, the company will expand the types of payments disclosed to include such things as travel, entertainment and gifts.

Some have voiced concerns that doctors are influenced by these payments in their treatment decisions and that in turn can drive up medical bills. Although most physicians believe free lunches or trips have no effect on their medical judgment, research has shown that such payments can affect how people act.

“The ethical handwriting is on the wall. Disclosure is coming. States are pushing for it, and once a few states do, it’s hard to imagine the federal government won’t line up behind,” said Dr. Arthur Caplan, director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Eli Lilly was the first drug company to report its educational grants for medical conferences publicly. Dr. John Lechleiter, chief executive of the company, said that made good business sense for the drug industry. “We’ve learned that letting people see for themselves what we’re doing is a good way to restore trust,” he said.

In the past two years, lawmakers introduced bills that would require drug and medical device manufacturers to disclose any payments to doctors exceeding $25, but the industry chafed at the strict reporting threshold. Eli Lilly had announced earlier that it intended to comply with key aspects of the legislation once some lawmakers agreed to the higher reporting threshold of $500.

Eli Lilly’s disclosure of payments to doctors will begin in the second half of 2009, for payments made in the first half of the year. The company doesn’t plan to report 2008 or earlier payments, noting that the legislation before Congress did not contemplate such a look back.

Lechleiter said physicians who advise the company or speak at conferences take time away from their medical practice. That’s why they need to be compensated at fair, market rates, he said.

A handful of states and the District of Columbia already have disclosure laws for payments from drug companies to doctors. Those states are Minnesota, Vermont, West Virginia and Maine. None of those states require disclosure of payments from medical device makers.

Dr. Peter Lurie, deputy director of the health research group at Public Citizen, said the state laws are not working very well. They have various exemptions and sometimes don’t even disclose the information to the public, he said. Lurie was skeptical that Eli Lilly’s announcement represented a step forward on the issue of more transparency in health care.

“There are dozens of pharmaceutical companies. … Most won’t follow this guideline at all, and there will be no enforcement,” Lurie said. “This is Ely Lilly’s attempt to forestall the federal legislation by saying we’re in effect complying anyway.” Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, also objects to the $500 threshold for reporting. Lurie said it should be much lower – $25 per gift.

“Most of what will wind up being disclosed is speaker’s fees, consulting and research grants,” Lurie said. “But most people want to know more than that. They want to know about meals, travel and that sort of thing. A lot of people will be cut out by the $500 annual limit.”

THE TRUE STORY OF GARTH DANIELS

Garth Daniels wants to be a photographer – to capture a moment of exquisite beauty or a timeless truth. Garth Daniels wants to be free.

In his very neat bedroom at his parent’s Scoresby home is a poster of Nelson Mandela looking out – “There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere.” Garth Daniels knows this to be true; after twelve excruciating years of being drugged, imprisoned without trial, forced into unlawful clinical tests, abused by the Victoria Mental Health system and seen his family fight to the last cent to free him – there is no easy walk – Garth Daniels is still not free.

His parents, Marilyn and Bernard left a repressive South Africa divided brutally by apartheid when Garth was only five. It was to provide a freer life in a country that better cherished the rights of individuals regardless of your ethnic origins: Bernard is of part Kalahari heritage in amongst an exotic mix of other nations. Garth’s parents saw first hand how police beat suspects, how the legal system distorted justice and how the mental health facilities in South Africa were institutes of torture and housed some of the most despicable crimes in apartheid’s inglorious history. But Australia would be different. It was a country that offered hope to their children and Bernard wanted, like any parent, to provide every opportunity for their future wellbeing.

In 1996, after a party, being like many a 21 year old has been, slightly stoned from one too many joints, Garth Daniels felt slightly unwell and presented to Maroondah Hospital. From what was a rudimentary visit quickly collapsed Garth Daniels into a 12 year nightmare that is still not over. At a stroke of a pen, without need for charging, without trial, Garth Daniels became an involuntary mental health patient and against his knowledge, his parent’s knowledge, without consent, he was placed forcibly and was unlawfully into a clandestine drug trial involving the highly controversial Zyprexa made by pharmaceutical behemoth Eli Lilly.

Zyprexa has been linked with triggering strokes, exacerbating suicidal tendencies; in fact there lists of over 150 known adverse side effects to this drug of which Garth Daniels has been unfortunate enough to experience many of them over the years. But he is not alone. Ely Lilly recently settled a class action in the US for nearly $700 million for not putting warning labels on Zyprexa bottles stating that it could cause humans diabetes. It is a drug that has been removed from use in many countries, in Asia and Europe yet it shows up constantly in mental health facilities and pharmacies around Australia: Eli Lilly still help fund many clinical trials, conferences and scholarships in this country and around the world. They are also the company who brought us Prozac until it too disappeared under the massive weight of class actions around the globe brought about by it linked with increased suicide and gun rampages. Despite all this seemingly damning evidence against Zyprexa, it still forms the corner stone of Ely Lilly’s global sales pouring over a billion dollars annually into their coffers.

After 1996 Garth Daniels’ mental health spiralled downwards into a never ending abyss of more psychiatrists, more involuntary stays in Eastern Health facilities, more Zyprexa, more “episodes,” more misery for himself and his now helpless family. The simple fact is that Garth Daniels has never recovered from that initial drug trial and looks as if he never will. But mental illness, whether caused by dubious drug trials, over recommended levels of Zyprexa, forced imprisonment is still not the real issue. Human Rights need to be extended to all human beings and this includes those subject to the Mental Health Act. In short, that is everybody whether you, family or friends believe you are mentally well or not- it is not your decision – it’s the doctors and at Eastern Health those doctors in charge are South Africans who don’t care much for questioning their treatment methods, their massive drug doses and behavioural throwback to apartheid practices when supposedly treating patients compassionately in an Australian mental health facility.

In 2006 Garth was incarcerated involuntarily at the Austin Hospital for over 6 months without access to legal rights, friends, parents and suffered terribly as a consequence. Whilst under a hospital which boasts the by line “Your partner in health” he was overdosed on Zyprexa exacerbating many of the already hideous side effects compounded even more by loneliness and fear whilst in solitary confinement. Quite frankly Joseph Mengele would be a more comforting partner in health. Not satisfied with attempting to destroy Garth’s health, Austin Hospital then took Bernard and Marilyn Daniels’ to VCAT in an attempt to strip Bernard of his power of medical attorney and their right to be guardian over Garth. Put simply it was a disgrace that in Victoria 2006, boasting of freedom and supporting family, here was an instance where Austin Health sought to destroy the one vestige of hope Garth Daniels was clinging to. The Victorian government who were well aware of the issues and the case have stood by and allowed this evil to happen. Mercifully VCAT realised that it was manipulative and indeed unnecessary for any action involving the family break up to be even considered and threw the case out. What happened next has continued a nightmare under the auspices of Victorian Mental Health, Victoria Government and those at Maroondah and Box Hill hospitals.

In the meantime the Victorian government who are well aware of the issues and the medical and legal cases involving Garth Daniels have stood by and allowed this evil to happen. The ghost of Edmund Bourke must prowl the corridors of the Health Department and Premier’s office screaming, “FOR EVIL TO FLOURISH IT TAKES GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING.” In the case it has taken many good people to do absolutely nothing.

This story has also been bouncing off the walls of ‘The Age” – a media outlet constantly trumpeting that it is one of the world’s leading papers. Apart from a couple of castrated articles written with no names and really nil impact. They were unable to generate any indignity among a wider media, absolutely nothing has been written of this in the wider press or exposed in the electronic media. Considering that it took the journalist Mark Russell nearly a year of constant urging to eventually write such a veiled piece for the “Sunday Age” is in itself shameful. It is shameful mainly on behalf of the Age’s legal team who have constantly suppressed the article. It has meant that despite knowing of Garth Daniels dreadful plight for over two years, “The Age” has remained silent and Garth Daniels has been left to suffer and his father been made to fight for his son’s safety alone.

Eventually Garth is released to allow a gradual withdrawal of Zyprexa side effects and entered Maroondah Hospital in January 2008 seeking medical assistance and was immediately and involuntarily incarcerated at the stroke of a doctor’s pen. Plunged into solitary confinement for a month, where he was allowed to shout for five minutes a day through a thick door at his distraught parents, helpless and unable to save him. Garth Daniel’s was confined in a cell for 24 hours a day where he ate, drank, urinated and defecated in the same confines. Every basic human right was trampled and if we were reading this as happening in Zimbabwe or Tibet we as human beings of a supposedly moral and legally fair society would be horrified. But to have this happen to Garth Daniels and no one in the hospital system, the Victorian government or the media do anything about this abomination; one has to wonder who is compassionate and who are cowards.

Garth Daniels was released into the care of the Alfred Hospital who actually cared and nursed him back to health. The moment he was taken into care at the Maroondah Hospital instead of being treated as a human being he was again thrown into solitary confinement, treated worse than an abused dog and afforded absolutely no rights. This is a spiral bouncing him between the Alfred to nurse him back to health and to the Maroondah to again destroy his fragile sanity and health again. There can be no excuse for this as it violates every tenet of human rights. It is immoral, it is deliberate and Garth Daniels will die if this inhumanity is allowed to continue for much longer. Someone on the Victorian government needs to be held responsible for what the myriad of doctors, many of whom are South African immigrants still practicing apartheid health treatments upon an innocent man. The Supreme Court made a ruling to bring about better care for Garth Daniels. This decision handed down to the Maroondah and Alfred Hospitals has been ignored by those doctors at Maroondah charged with Garth’s well being. Changing the “Treatment Plan” to a “Management Plan” had effectively derailed that 10 June Supreme Court ruling of Justice Judd. The Mental Health Review Board approved the Alfred Hospital Treatment Plan but could not rule on the Maroondah Hospital Treatment Plan as it had been retitled Management Plan, which was outside the jurisdiction of the Board.

Not surprising Garth Daniels was again transferred from Maroondah Hospital after spending three gruelling weeks in solitary confinement to the Alfred, where Garth is being nurtured back to health, and out of seclusion only to be prepared to be transferred back to Maroondah Hospital.(sic)

One day soon there may be a very small obituary in this paper stating that Garth Daniels, loved son of Bernard and Marilyn, loving brother of Andre has passed away.

What it will not say is that he has been tortured to death under the very eye of those we turn to in moments of need. The Victoria Government touts a human rights charter that has completely and utterly deserted Garth Daniels and his family at the moment they needed it. Leaving South Africa filled Bernard and his family with hope but Garth Daniels is on the verge of being killed by the Mental Health system of Victoria.

Australian Parents Protest Psychiatric Damage to Children

OPENS TO EXPOSE PSYCHIATRY’S HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES
With the drugging of our children skyrocketing and involuntary commitment increasing, two parents will speak out about the dangers of psychiatry at the 2008 Victorian opening Tuesday 16th September 2008.

Ms Nicola Mulcahy whose daughter became suicidal after being on the antidepressant Zoloft for 5 days and Mr. Bernard Daniels whose son has been involuntarily committed for most of the last 12 years are joining the international psychiatric watchdog group Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) to open a chillingly informative exhibit which exposes the human rights abuse of psychiatry including child drugging.  
 
Ms Mulcahy denounces the unnecessary drugging of our children in Australia. She lived through a parent’s worst nightmare when her daughter tried on several occasions to commit suicide. Ms Mulcahy said, “Last year I took my daughter to a private Women’s Health Clinic to investigate her painful periods and the doctor prescribed the antidepressant Zoloft advising me that it was approved and was very effective for children. She told me that the Zoloft would assist until the contraceptive pill took effect in 3 months.  Within 5 days my daughter became suicidal, aggressive and violent. Up until this point my daughter had never displayed any of these characteristics.   Her family and friends all described her as a kind, caring and responsible girl.  After nearly losing her life by ingesting 200 ml of eucalyptus oil she was admitted to hospital and eventually transferred to the hospital’s adolescent psychiatric ward where she continued to try and commit suicide.”
 
“We were however one of the few lucky ones, because I stumbled by accident across the true nature and danger of these drugs and found that they can cause suicidal behavior and are not even approved for use in children under 18  in Australia. Many thousands of other parents every year are not so lucky, most of them don’t even know where to go to find the information that they should have been given in the first place, so they are trapped in the system that is controlled by an industry with a compromised agenda that is at the detriment of the health and safety of our children. Parents have a right to know about the side-effects of any proposed treatment for their children so they can give fully informed consent. In too many cases this does not happen and parents have to go through what I did and some even lose their child because of these psychiatric drugs,” says Ms Mulcahy.
 
When it comes to involuntary commitment, Mr. Bernard Daniels, his family and his son Garth are living in what can only be described as hell on earth.  Mr Daniels said, “A rudimentary visit to a hospital quickly collapsed my son Garth, into a 12 year nightmare that is still not over. At a stroke of a pen, without the need for a formal charge and without trial, Garth became an involuntary mental health patient and without his or our knowledge and without any form of consent, he was placed forcibly into a drug trial involving the highly controversial antipsychotic Zyprexa. Zyprexa is known to cause weight gain, diabetes, heart problems, hallucinations and suicidal behavior. Despite these side-effects my son is still not allowed to refuse the drug because he is an involuntary patient.  There is no informed consent for an involuntary patient in any state in Australia. Together psychiatry and their bedfellows, the drug companies have worked on destroying my son’s life and are hard at work destroying many people’s lives including the many children who are involuntarily detained around Australia.
 
Free to the public, this state-of-the-art exhibit exposes psychiatry as an industry driven entirely by profit. It is being shown internationally in more than 30 countries and features 15 display panels that incorporate audio-visual presentations depicting human rights abuses by psychiatry and carries statements from health professionals, academics, legal and human rights experts, and victims of psychiatric brutalities.  
 
It also reveals how children in Australia on psychiatric drugs have suffered heart attacks, strokes, hallucinations and suicidal behaviour.  People touring the exhibit can sign Federal petitions calling for black-box warnings to be put onto psychiatric drugs warning of the risk of suicide and heart problems and requesting that drug product information be placed on medication containers telling consumers that they are encouraged to report any adverse drug reactions to the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Parents of ill man battle hospital over son’s care

THE parents of a mentally ill man who was allegedly denied food and water and forced to defecate in a cardboard tray while locked in isolation in a public hospital have taken action in the Supreme Court to wrest back control of their son’s medical care.

The Scoresby couple wants the court to prevent their 33-year-old son, who they believe has been wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia, from being transferred back to the Maroondah Hospital at Ringwood from The Alfred, where he is being treated.

The man’s parents — who have been feuding with mental health authorities since their son’s diagnosis in 1996 — want to care for him at home. —

They say his human and legal rights were violated and his life put at risk earlier this year by staff at Maroondah Hospital.

In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the father of G — who the state’s public advocate, Colleen Pearce, has asked not be named for privacy reasons — said his son, who had been living at home, went to Maroondah Hospital’s emergency department on January 5 because he felt dehydrated and anxious.

G’s father said his son was certified and incarcerated in the high-dependency isolation ward within minutes of seeing a psychiatrist and without any consultation with the family.

G’s treatment over the next few weeks, according to his father, endangered his life.

“G was stripped of all dignity and forced by medical and nursing staff to defecate in a tray,” G’s father said in his affidavit.

“Forced to urinate in a bottle. Forced to eat in the same room as having just relieved his bowels.

“G spent three weeks in solitary seclusion without being allowed to have a shower, wash his hands … and was subject to a very serious health risk.”

G’s father said he had to shout through a thick glass door to his son during access visits.

And he claimed that on January 28, G was denied food or water between 8.30am and 2.40pm because he had not obeyed nurses’ orders.

Eastern Health denies mistreating G. “Eastern Health treats all its patients in its mental health service with the highest standards and in accordance with the Mental Health Act,” spokesman Ben Kelly told The Sunday Age.

“Our priority is to treat patients at the highest standard of care with dignity and respect and to make every effort to improve their wellbeing.”

G’s father claims his son’s mental health problems have been caused by the anti-psychotic drugs, including the controversial Zyprexa, that he has been prescribed since he first went to Maroondah Hospital in 1996 complaining of a cannabis-induced headache.

G’s latest admission to hospital, on August 7, followed a successful period of living at home and reporting to the Maroondah Hospital at 9.30am and 3pm each day for his medication — a treatment plan approved by the Mental Health Review Board in June.

After feeling ill, G admitted himself to Maroondah Hospital, where he was placed in seclusion for three weeks before being sent to The Alfred a fortnight ago.

G’s father says he now fears he will be returned to Maroondah.

He says he took the Supreme Court action in May because he was outraged over a decision by the state’s chief psychiatrist that G should return to hospital care. He says he wants a court ruling that would ensure G is never again put under the care of staff at Maroondah Hospital.

When asked how G was coping, his father said: “His comment when coming out of sedation was: ‘Dad, they can’t keep doing this to me … please Dad, no more’.”

The psychiatric watchdog, Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), says the capture of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic will bring to justice a psychiatrist whose genocide of thousands was reminiscent of Nazi psychiatric crime during World War II, and that few people are aware that the “ethnic cleansing” ridding a geographical area of racially “inferior” people-carried out in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and later in Kosovo, was based on the same psychiatric-inspired racial hygiene programs that led to the Nazi Holocaust.

In 1992, CCHR formally submitted to the World Psychiatric Association, the World Federation for Mental Health and the Mental Health Division of the World Health Organization information concerning the psychiatric atrocities committed in the region formerly called Yugoslavia.

CCHR presented the same information about psychiatry’s role in initiating and conducting the “ethnic cleansing” atrocities in Bosnia-Herzegovina to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

On September 1, 1999, members of the Council of Europe signed a Resolution, “Human suffering and degradation following ethnic cleansing,” that recognized the two psychiatrists as “the architects of the ethnic cleansing campaign” in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia.

The Hague tribunal indicted Karadzic in absentia in 1995 for genocide over the 43-month siege of Sarajevo that claimed 12,000 lives and orchestrating the 1995 massacre of 8,000 Muslims. Dr. Edward Klain, a psychiatrist and advisor to the Serbian Military who features in a CCHR documentary, Psychiatry: An Industry of Death, detailed how in Nazi Germany it was “technically very difficult” to exterminate six million Jews. Concentration camps and gas chambers need to be established. In Bosnia, hatred and crimes against inhumanity were incited through propaganda: “Serbs would massacre, for example, one hundred to two hundred people. Or rape one hundred women, or one hundred girls, so that they would be terrorized so that they flee. Then you get an ethnically pure land,” Klain said.

CCHR’s evidence showed that Karadzic had trained under former Social Democratic Party (SDP) founder, psychiatrist Jovan Raskovic. Before his death in 1992, Raskovic told Belgrade television and Vjeskik newspaper that he and his party had “lit the fuse of Serbian nationalism” with Freudian principles about inferiority and superiority. Raskovic was talking about his and Karadzic’s propagation that Croats were “fixated on the castration complex,” a Freudian principle, while Muslims were domineering. Serbs, they said, possessed “the qualities of authority” and were destined leaders, while Croats and Muslims were the lesser races that needed to be eliminated. The psychiatrist pushed his Freudian-based theories on the races of Yugoslavia in his book Luda Zemla (A Mad Country) and as part of a media campaign in which he was hailed as the greatest psychiatrist and scientist of his era.

“I feel responsible because I made the preparations for this war, even if not the military preparations. If I hadn’t created this emotional strain in the Serbian people, nothing would have happened,” Raskovic stated.

Other evidence presented to the Hague Tribunal and Council of Europe was that former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, who also flamed the conflict against ethnic minorities, had been a patient of Karadzic’s for 25 years. Together, he and Karadzic established the ethnic cleansing program and allowed the mass torture, rape and extermination of the innocent.

CCHR said justice can be served now that the architect of the Bosnian ethnic cleansing has been captured, unlike in Nazi Germany where dozens of psychiatrists responsible for sterilization and genocidal crimes escaped trial and returned to practice in Germany and other countries around the world. Like Karadzic in Bosnia, Ernst Rudin was a psychiatrist who played a major role in setting the stage for the Holocaust. Rudin was president of the International Federation of Eugenic Organizations and world leader of the eugenics movement which sought to remove “inferior” individuals from society by segregation, sterilization, or death in order to create a “better” race. In 1933 Rudin was chosen by Hitler’s Reich Ministry to lead Germany’s racial purity program. Rudin would later publicly praise Hitler for making his “more than thirty-year-old dream a reality” by imposing “racial hygiene” upon the German people.
