NYACK – A Rockland County psychiatrist has been arrested for allegedly selling millions of dollars worth of prescriptions for painkillers to drug dealers out of his Nyack and Manhattan offices.
Dr. David Brizer, author of the books “Quitting Smoking for Dummies” and “Addiction and Recovery for Beginners,” was indicted for allegedly selling prescriptions for oxycodone and other powerful drugs to drug dealers from his offices on Burd Street and midtown Manhattan
Investigators say they believe the doctor started selling prescriptions back in February 2010, and continued to do so through August 2012.
Officials believe Brizer may have profited as much a $500,000 from the illegal trade.
One of Brizer’s alleged clients was Franklin Walker, a reputed Orange County drug dealer. Authorities say Brizer’s prescriptions allowed Walker to obtain as many as 240 oycodone pills at a time over a two-year period. Walker would then allegedly sell the pills.
The state Department of Health has temporarily suspended Brizer’s license until the case is resolved.
Walker was arrested in December and faces up to seven years in prison.
